Health benefits from Malunggay

     Malunggay with scientific name: moringa oleifera, horseradish tree in english. Is widely known in the Philippines. It will grow anywhere in the backyard. Malunggay can be used as vegetables and medicine as well. It also known as miracle plant because all the parts of malunggay can be used.

     Do you know that malunggay pods, leaves and flowers make a tasty, nutritious vegetable? Because of its home benefits, malunggay is labeled as "mother's best friend," and "nature's medicine cabinet."

     According to DepEd Health & Nutrition Center, 1 gram of malunggay leaves has the equivalent of 4x vitamin A (1g carrot), 4x vitamin C (1g orange) and 3x potassium (1g banana). A 100-gram malunggay leaves provide 75 calories of food energy, 6 grams of protein, 13 grams of carbohydrates, and 353 milligrams of calcium.

     The leaves are not only rich in natural vitamins, they are also loaded with 46 natural antioxidants that help control the symptoms of the aging process and improve cardiovascular health.

     Did you know that our body manufactures only 12 of the 20 different amino acids needed to build proteins, which are essential for the growth, repair and cell maintenance. The other eight essential amino acids must come from diet. One professor said that "One of the things that impresses about malunggay is the fact that it has the full complement of the essential amino acids that human beings need- there are eight of them that we cannot synthesize, so we have to get them from our food."
