Medicinal Usage of TOMATO

The consumption of tomato prevents scurvy, has a soothing effect on the body, is anti-toxic, disinfectant, laxative, and tonic. Tomatoes, when fully ripe, are recommended for constipation, scrofula or tuberculosis of the lymph glands in the neck, neuritis, liver problems, mental strain, arthritis, polyneuritis or inflammation of several nerves, rheumatism and indigestion. It should be eaten in abundance but not mixed with starch based in the article of JC Kurian, PH.D.,D.SC. in his book "Amazing Healing Plants".

A variety of studies show that men who regularly eat fresh tomato, as well as tomato sauce or juice, are at much lower risk of prostate cancer. This fact is easily explained bearing in mind that the tomato is the riches food source of lycopene, the carotenoid that protects the cells of the prostate from oxidation and abnormal growth. Regular tomato consumption in any form has been shown to be an important factor in the prevention of prostate cancer, one of the most frequent cancers among males. Bearing in mind what is known about the effect of lycopene on prostatic tissue, it may be deduced that regular tomato consumption promotes proper prostate function overall. In addition to preventing cancerous degeneration of its cells, tomato can also reduce excessive growth of the prostate, which is so common in men beyond age 50.

Tomatoes are remarkable blood alkalizers, which neutralize and help eliminate metabolic waste products, most of which are acidic. They are also diuretic, thus facilitating the work of the kidneys. Their regular consumption is highly recommended to "cleanse" the blood in case of gout, kidney failure with an increase in blood urea, or chronic presence of toxins in the body because of a diet rich in meats and animal proteins.

Externally used, the ripe tomatoes are applied directly over burns, sunburns, insect bites, piles, tumors, swollen eyes, warts and wounds. The pounded leaves are used as a soothing and softening poultice for inflammations.

The juice of the green tomato makes a good gargle for tonsillitis and general inflammation of the throat. And the juice of the ripe fruit mixed with celery juice is recommended for nephritis or disease of kidney inflammation. For this take 2 or 3 cups a day.

Because Tomato is rich in vitamins and minerals, and above all antioxidant carotenoids (lycopene and beta-carotene), tomatoes naturally stimulate the immune functions of the body. They increase the infection-fighting capabilities of the body, which are the ones that finally eliminate infectious agents (contrary to common belief, antibiotics are not responsible for this).

Tomato has antioxidant effect, it prevent the oxidation of the cholesterol transported by low-density lipoproteins (LDL), which cause the narrowing and hardening of the arteries associated with arteriosclerosis. Tomatoes are very useful as a prophylactic for all who experience circulatory system disorders, including angina and heart attack.

Another study show that regular consumption of Tomato also has a protective effect from cancers of the mouth, esophagus, stomach, colon, and rectum. Investigators describe this typical Mediterranean food as highly protective against all types of cancers of the digestive tract.
